With the recent influx of newborn photographs I’ve been taking (which I adore by the way) I have also gotten quite a few emails asking how to get those little people to stay asleep, and pose them, etc. First let me say that it is not as easy as it looks, newborn sessions typically last double the length of a regular session and you have to be extremely patient. Here are some tips to keep baby sleeping:
1. Turn up the heat – even in the summer months turning up the heat in your home or plugging in a small space heater in your shooting space can make a huge difference. If you are sweaty and hot then most likely the baby is just right. Keep in mind that the little ones have no clothes on for this so the heat makes them feel cozy.
2. Make some noise – a white noise machine helps keep the baby sound asleep, it does not work for all babies, but it will for most and can keep them sleeping for longer periods of time.
3. Fill them up – you know how tired you get after filling yourself to the brim? well it works the same way for newborns…feeding the little one (as full as you can get there little tummy) right before you start taking pictures makes them sleep longer. Make sure to burp them though or you will end up with some nice surprises on your backdrop and blankets (or if you are as lucky as me, right on you!).
That is all for this newborn tip but be sure to check back for more! If you have specific questions you can email me and I will be sure to get back to you asap.
I cannot post without a picture so here is another shot of little J…

Much Love,
Nicole
